Whenever someone thinks about starting a business or any other initiatives, the first question they should ask themselves is, are they doing it to look good or are they doing it to start a business.

As I write this blog, there is a ginormous amount of COVID cases coming up in India and many people are coming up to help. Many other people feel the need to help. But what is their intention behind wanting to help?

What’s the intention?

Some people start to help (not outwardly) with the hope of getting recognition and this is a very subconscious thought process because no one is that selfish to outwardly go out there for recognition. But still, whatever they do, they expect people to thank them, make them feel good and when everyone is busy in this crisis and take whatever help they need and disappear, these same people who offered help but didn’t get any appreciation in return quit doing what they were doing because they didn’t get the results they were looking for.

On the contrary, people who enter the scenario to contribute, they keep doing the work, selflessly without thinking about what people think and whether people appreciated their efforts or now and these are the people who make the MAXIMUM impact and reach the most number of people and make a difference to the current situation, and recognition automatically follows because of their consistent effort.

Same goes with business.

When you started your business…?

When someone thinks about starting a business, there are some secret intentions behind starting a business. These intentions are pretty subconscious and people don’t even notice them outwardly themselves.

But if a person has not been treated with respect at their jobs or if someone has not got the professional success that they were looking for or if someone longs for recognition, they think about starting a business expecting it to make them rich and famous in no time. There is nothing wrong with these people expecting recognition for all that they do for their clients but when the first intention is recognition, the problem arises when they don’t get the recognition, when the business does not perform as per their expectations and when there are not many clients to appreciate them.

Is The Need For Recognition Holding You Back?

It is then that these business owners start feeling emotionally drained because their subconscious expectation from this business was recognition and money (because money is also a contributor to recognition). And because they get emotionally exhausted and thirsty, they don’t do the activities that need to be done to keep the business going.

So instead of working on revenue generating activities of the business, they spend most of their time on non revenue generating activities such as production of inventory, surveys, feedback etc. I am not saying that these activities are not important. All I am saying is that the business cannot survive if people don’t focus on revenue generating activities which are marketing and sales.

What If You Start Contributing?

But what if someone comes from a place of contribution? What if someone is passionate about solving a problem irrespective of whether they get recognition or not.

If a business owner comes from a place of solving a problem, then he or she tries to find as many people who are facing that problem. This entrepreneur then goes out of their way to make them realize that their problem needs to be solved and what are the steps that will solve their problem. This activity is nothing but marketing and selling.

And because this entrepreneur goes out and talks to a number of people to solve their problem or discuss their problem, more and more people get interested in working with them and taking their help in solving their problem.

The Impact of Contribution

This entrepreneur who comes from a place of contribution never gets tired of helping people, never gets tired of finding more people who need this problem solved and never gets tired of giving people the solution that will help them.

Thus, this entrepreneur is never short of funds, never short of recognition even when his or her intention was never to aim for it in the first place.

Conclusion

So, when you think about starting a business, or think about scaling your business or find yourself stuck in business, ask yourself this honest question, “What was your intention behind starting this business?”

If you were honest with yourself, you will get the right answer. Make corrections accordingly.
